Gallery of South Woodham Ferrers Shops from the past
South Woodham Ferrers has never been the most reliable town to open a shop in. Shops have come and gone, one wave after another.
People may be remember some of these from the past.
White's Family Butchers
1. White's Family Butchers on the corner of King Edward's and Hullbridge Road. This is now a Co-Op undertakers. White's Butchers used to cook burgers and hot dogs on an enormous BBQ outside the shop to sell to people attending the Victorian Evening when it was held along Hullbridge Road and the Village Hall. Many of the residents allowed stallholders free use of their electricuty to light their stalls.
The Victorian Evening was a popular event for many years. The Rotary used to order and erect the stalls, stallholders would dress in Victorian clothing. Children would sing carols to entertain visitors and there was a good traditional atmosphere. Lots of money was raised for charity. Silent auctions and more fund-raising events took place inside the village hall. People could come, enjoy tea and cakes, kids could play games and lots of fun was had by all. Hullbridge Road would be closed to traffic on these occasions and at the time, it was said that policing and insurance became too expensive for the Victorian Evening to continue.
