Arts and Crafts in South Woodham Ferrers
Crafty activities in South Woodham Ferrers
A surprising number of creative people make things from various media in South Woodham Ferrers. These are sold at craft fairs or local Christmas Fayres. RHS Hyde Hall hosts regular Craft Fayres where craftsmen display and sell high quality products.
There are a few clubs where groups of like-minded individuals come together at set times to share knowledge and make their crafts together. Admittedly, most of these are groups of retired people, some under the umbrella of the University of the Third Age, Women's Institute and church groups. There are several current craft groups that meets in the South Woodham Ferrers Village Hall which include long established quilting and patchwork groups. A general hobby craft group meets in the small room at the back (right) of the village hall on Friday afternoons (they had a waiting list) and a card making group that is held on another day on the other side of the building. Please check the Village Hall noticeboard for details.
Pottery Groups in South Woodham
A clutch of potters beaver away in She Sheds and studios at their homes in the town. They either hand-build or throw pottery on a wheel. Most exhibit at local arts and crafts exhibitions and sell to gift shops. A couple of potters run private classes to pass on their skills.
Paint a Pot Groups - the nearest pottery painting craft sessions are at Barleylands in Billericay. We used to have one many years ago in South Woodham but rents are just to steep to make it viable.
Crafts for Kids
The Mother and Toddler Group which meets on Tuesday mornings at the Evangelical Church in Hullbridge Road has a crafts table for pre-school children. One of the Churches also runs ‘messy church’ on a Sunday morning which involves crafts but there are no dedicated arts and crafts classes for kids otherwise.
Adults fare much better and a good selection of artistic skills are practised in and around the town.
