Pickpockets targeting the elderly

pickpocket

Pickpocketing has been increasing steadily over the last number of years, much of it is focused on elderly or vulnerable targets and tends to happen in supermarkets and other shops.  Older people may also be more likely to carry cash rather than depend on cards.

Contactless cards allow thieves to spend your money on transactions below £30 or a specific limit.
Always report any thefts to a bank as soon as you are aware that this has happened to you.

Methods of protecting oneself:

  • Attach small bells to your purse and you will be able to hear it being moved in quiet areas.
  • Be aware of any person hovering nearby. Stay safe and move away if you feel uncomfortable.
  • Men should never ever keep a wallet in their trousers back pocket
  • Keep purses and wallets out of sight

Incidents of pickpocketing in South Woodham Ferrers

Cases of purses and bags being stolen are thankfully rare in South Woodham. These are more likely to happen in busier shopping areas such as Maldon, Chelmsford, Basildon, Lakeside or Southend. Muggings in South Woodham Ferrers are virtually unheard of. It is easy to become complacent and forget to take precautions when visiting areas outside our small town.
